My name is Canaan Staley. As a teenager, I rejected Christianity, and didn't know if there really was a God or not. I fell into deep depression and contemplated suicide, and the thought of death was on my mind everyday. I considered if death truly was the end, and what would happen to me after I died.
After years of toiling in my mind, I came to the conclusion that if God was true and just, He would punish me for my sins. The thought terrified me, and so I tried to see what I could do to please God: I tried to be a good person, I went to college to see what I could do to help others, and I thought that maybe if I saved someone else's life, perhaps God would let me into Heaven.
I started attending Hillview Baptist Church in Springfield, OR because I wanted to see what else I needed to do in order to please God. However, it was there that I heard what Jesus already did that for me:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. " - John 3:16 (KJV)
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." - Romans 6:23 (KJV)
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
I remember going to church for weeks; I knew I was lost and needed to be saved from my sins. On a Saturday in September 2017, I sat down and did what the Bible said I needed to do: I prayed and told Jesus that I knew He died to take the punishment for my sins, and that I trust Him as my Saviour.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." - Romans 10:9-13
